What nbn speed do you need?
Every nbn tier is good for different things. Here is what each is good for, and where to check what is available at your address.
Short answer
It depends on how many people are online at once and what they are doing. A household of one or two people browsing and streaming needs less than a household of four running video calls, gaming and streaming at the same time. The table below is the same good for guidance in our Key Facts Sheet, without picking a plan for you.
nbn tiers and what they are good for
| nbn tier | Good for |
|---|---|
| 12/1 Mbps | Email, web browsing and standard definition video for one person at a time |
| 25/5 Mbps, 25/10 Mbps, Fixed Wireless 25M/5M | HD video on one screen, video calls and browsing for one or two people at once |
| 50/20 Mbps | HD video on two screens, video calls, gaming and browsing for two to four people at once |
| 100/20 Mbps, 100/40 Mbps, Fixed Wireless Plus | Two 4K streams, several video calls, gaming and large downloads for a household of four or more |
| 250/100 Mbps, Fixed Wireless Fast | Several 4K streams, working from home on every desk, cloud backups and gaming at once |
| 500/50 Mbps, 500/200 Mbps, Fixed Wireless Superfast | Every screen and device in a busy household or small office at once, very large file transfers |
| 750/50 Mbps, 1000/100 Mbps, 1000/400 Mbps, 2000/100 Mbps, 2000/200 Mbps, 2000/500 Mbps | The fastest tiers nbn offers: multi-gigabit downloads, studios, server backups and many simultaneous users |
Does the provider change the speed?
The nbn network and the tiers available at your address are the same whichever provider you choose. What differs between providers is price, contract terms, support and extras such as CGNAT and a static IP.
